Cronobacter is a germ that can live in very dry places, and it has been found in dry foods, such as infant formula and powdered milk. The bacteria can cause severe bloodstream infections (sepsis) or meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although Cronobacter infections are very rare, they can occur in anyone, and some groups are at higher risk for a serious infection. Infants younger than 2 months old, infants born prematurely, and infants with weakened immune systems are more likely to be sickened by Cronobacter. None of the products included in this recall are intended for infants (people under the age of 1), according to the FDA statement. People 65 and older and people with compromised or weakened immune systems can also be at higher risk. In adults, symptoms of the infection can include fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infection (UTI). According to a preliminary root-cause analysis, the potential contamination was caused by a failure to meet commercial sterility specifications, per the statement. The recall includes a variety of beverages, liquid coffee, pediatric nutritional supplements, protein shakes, nutritional shakes, and thickened liquids sold under several brand names, including Oatly, Stumptown, Glucerna, Intelligentsia, Aloha, Kate Farms, and Premier Protein.
